Recognizing Tinnitus – Sometimes the Ringing Is Permanent

Everyone has experienced that annoying ringing or buzzing in his or her ears at some point. However, you might not know that there is a term for this irritating phenomenon: tinnitus. What is Tinnitus?

Definition of Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the “perception of sound in the head even when there is no sound coming from the environment.” The sensation caused by tinnitus has been described by affected individuals as a buzzing, ringing, hissing, and even roaring sound.

The tricky thing about tinnitus is that it affects different people in different ways. Think of it like a snowflake – no two snowflakes are the same, just as no two cases of tinnitus are the same. It can seem like it is in one ear, both ears, or even squarely in the center of your head.

Everyone can be affected by tinnitus, even those with healthy hearing. Some people hear the incessant ringing in their ears for a few days after a loud concert or sporting event, with it eventually fading away.

Some people, unfortunately, experience a constant buzzing and find that it actually has a negative effect on their lives, causing them to seek help for the condition.

Why Does Tinnitus Happen?

There is no singular cause of tinnitus. Of the numerous causes of tinnitus, some are medically treatable while some require alternative forms of treatment.

Generally, tinnitus is caused when the eardrum receives too much pressure. This usually occurs in the inner ear, where we find the cells that actually carry sounds we hear from our hearing nerves to our brains. These cells can become damaged over time, either from old age, exposure to loud noise or even injury, resulting in hearing loss and other effects like tinnitus.

How Can I Treat Tinnitus?

In keeping with the theme, there is no master cure for tinnitus. As each case is different, each prescribed treatment will vary as well.

Considering the complex nature of our brain and hearing system, it is easy to understand how tackling such a condition can be tricky.

The best way to eliminate tinnitus from affected you is to prevent it from happening. If you are a frequenter of live music (which is common in Music City), remember: earplugs are your friends. They can save you a multi-day headache and actually enhance the sound of the music by eliminating chatter.

There are other summertime activities such as yard work and fireworks displays that can get quite loud as well. Use good judgment in loud situations and try to avoid excessive noise whenever possible.
