Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids

When it comes to hearing aids, we at Clear Choice Hearing Center understand that comfort is more than just a luxury. We offer multiple models to satisfy all of our customers’ needs and want you to leave our office with the best possible model for your specific needs. The degree of your hearing loss plays a vital role in deciding which hearing aid is right for you, with other factors like lifestyle, dexterity and personal preference going into consideration as well.

Behind the Ear, or BTE, instruments are very versatile in fit and function. The housing that encases the technology is fit behind the ear, also considered “on top” of the ear. From there, a clear plastic tube runs from the housing to the ear canal, which directs the amplified sounds. The majority of behind the ear models will include advanced directional microphones which are designed to help distinguish speech from noisy or cluttered background noise.

There are 2 main types of BTE’s that we will look at today: the Traditional Behind the Ear and the Slim Behind the Ear.

Traditional Behind the Ear

These hearing aids are designed to handle more intense sounds without distortion. This is accomplished by utilizing a thicker tube and more technology parts, resulting in a slightly larger housing than other models. The more circuitry in the larger housing allows for greater amplification. The bigger design can be more difficult to handle for some, but can also be much more durable and even water-resistant. This BTE works best for those who experience profound hearing loss but is versatile enough to work well for those experiencing mild to severe hearing loss.

Slim Behind the Ear

Also known as the mini BTE or open BTE, this variation of the behind-the-ear hearing is much newer to the hearing aid world, entering the industry the just the past decade. While not as versatile as a traditional BTE, this model is best used for patients with high-frequency hearing loss, mostly due to the open tip allowing low frequencies to escape before they have a chance to reach the eardrum. The slimmer design requires the sacrifice of some technology that you would find in a larger model, so the slim BTE won’t be able to handle the more powerful sounds that a traditional BTE could take on with ease. However, the less cumbersome size and design of the slim BTE has made it a very popular choice among those with mild to moderate hearing loss.
